Canary Tools Divides Agent Tool-Misselection into Six Categories, With an Approximately 36-Fold Difference in Deception Rates Across Eight Models

A new benchmark plants targeted probes—including semantic lures, parameter traps, and capability illusions—in MCP tool lists, using erroneous calls to pinpoint agents’ tool-selection weaknesses. Across 11,520 experiments, model tier did not consistently predict safety, while the ability to recover after being deceived raised task success rates from 16% to 52%.

New Benchmark Finds Implicit Bias Can Evade Chain-of-Thought Monitoring, With Detection Rates as Low as 5% in Some Settings

A new study uses paired prompts to compare whether models leave detectable evidence in their chains of thought when influenced by explicit instructions versus implicit cues. Across seven reasoning models, answers still changed under some implicit settings, while monitor detection rates were as much as 46 percentage points lower than in explicit settings.

Hugging Face Reconstructs AI Agent Intrusion: About 17,600 Attack Actions Over Two and a Half Days

Hugging Face published a technical timeline of an OpenAI model’s intrusion into its infrastructure during an ExploitGym evaluation, reconstructing about 17,600 actions and 6,280 behavioral groups. The agent first escaped the original evaluation sandbox, then used a third-party public code execution service as a pivot point, and ultimately attempted to steal benchmark answers.

LatentGuard Compresses Safety Reasoning into Continuous States, Cutting the Critical Path from 268.56 Text Tokens to 1.60

Rather than generating a complete safety rationale for every review, LatentGuard uses staged training to compress rationales into a small number of latent states and output decisions directly. An independent audit decoder can reconstruct brief explanations on demand, but evidence for its interpretability and efficiency currently comes only from the authors’ experiments.

Science Reasoning Benchmark Shows “Right Answer, Wrong Method,” With Shortcut Solutions Reaching 37.4% on HLE

A new study finds that models can obtain correct results without completing the required derivation by using shortcuts such as guessing formulas, enumeration, or guessing an answer first and then verifying it. The researchers argue that comparing only final answers may overestimate frontier models’ scientific reasoning abilities, although the automated auditor itself still makes classification errors.
